Adhesive Solutions for General Industrial Manufacturing
Improve throughput, simplify assembly, and bond difficult materials with double-sided tape systems and high-performance structural adhesives — backed by our tesa® Platinum Distributor Partner status and full technical support.
Where Industrial Adhesives Outperform Mechanical Fastening
General manufacturing covers a wide range of substrates and process environments — and most of the failures below trace back to the wrong product for the real shop-floor conditions. See our adhesive selection guide for a structured approach to matching chemistry to your application.
Bond Quality Drift on Mixed Substrates
Assembly lines see rework and failures when metals, powder coatings, and plastics are bonded with products that do not tolerate the real combination of oil contamination, dust, humidity, and temperature swings present on the shop floor.
Vibration-Induced Fastener Loosening
Mechanical fixings in industrial machinery and appliances loosen over time under operational vibration — leading to maintenance calls, rattle, and potential safety issues. Viscoelastic adhesive bonds damp vibration rather than transmit it.
Lengthy Curing Times and Production Bottlenecks
Liquid adhesives often require extended holding times before parts can move to the next stage, creating rack storage requirements and slowing cycle time. Pressure-sensitive tape systems provide immediate handling strength with no wait.
Health and Safety Risks from Odours and VOCs
Standard solvent-based adhesives and certain structural acrylics emit strong odours and volatile organic compounds, requiring expensive extraction systems and creating a difficult working environment for production staff.
Difficulty Bonding Dissimilar Substrates
Bonding metal frames to plastic housings frequently fails under thermal cycling — the plastic expands faster than the metal and shears the bond line. Viscoelastic tape systems with high elongation accommodate this differential movement.
Complex Surface Preparation Requirements
Many structural adhesives require grit blasting or chemical etching to achieve full strength — adding significant time and cost. Modern primerless tape formulations achieve structural-grade bonds with an IPA wipe on the majority of industrial substrates.
Industrial Application Areas
From panel bonding to masking, tape and adhesive systems now cover the full range of general industrial assembly needs. See the tesa® ACXplus range and our substrate bonding guides for detail on specific material combinations.
Panel Bonding & Stiffeners
Enclosures, elevator panels, and machine skins — bond stiffeners and skins without visible fasteners. Acrylic foam tapes distribute load across the full bond area, improving fatigue performance and eliminating stress concentrations at fixing points.
Component Mounting
Sensors, brackets, nameplates, clips, and trim — fast, repeatable attachment without drilling or welding. Foam and film double-sided tapes; transfer tapes for thin-profile parts; high-tack grades for textured and powder-coated surfaces.
Gasketing & Sealing
Dust, moisture, and noise control for cabinets, housings, and enclosures. Single-sided foam tapes for perimeter seals; double-sided foam for sandwich compression joints; closed-cell grades where hermetic performance is required.
Vibration Damping & Acoustic Control
Viscoelastic tape cores absorb energy from machinery vibration, preventing the loosening and rattle common with metal-to-metal mechanical joints. Suitable for HVAC, appliances, and any fabricated assembly with recurring resonance issues.
Surface Protection
Protect painted, polished, or sensitive finishes through fabrication, assembly, and transit. PE protection films, specialty surface guards, and low-residue holding tapes — selected for clean removal without ghosting on the finished surface.
Masking for Finishing
Clean paint lines and protection through powder coating, plating, and anodising processes. Polyester and polyimide high-temperature masking tapes; powder-coat-compatible grades; fine-line masking for complex profiles and tight-tolerance edges.
Featured Products for Industrial Assembly
We compare tesa® and 3M™ portfolios against your substrate and process requirements — see the 3M™ VHB™ range alongside our specialist grades for LSE plastics and difficult-surface applications below.
tesa® ACXplus High Adhesion (706x Series)
Primerless bonding to low surface energy plastics and powder-coated surfaces — the grade of choice where standard acrylic foam tapes fail to achieve full strength without pre-treatment.
Highlights: bonds to PP, PE, and powder coat without primer; viscoelastic core for CTE compensation; wide temperature range.
Examples: ACXplus 7063 (800 µm), 7065 (1500 µm), 7068 (2000 µm).
Ideal for: LSE plastic housing assembly, powder-coated enclosures, mixed-material panel bonding.
3M™ VHB™ Tape Family
High-strength acrylic foam tapes as direct alternatives to rivets and welds in demanding industrial duty — immediate handling strength, environmental seal, and vibration damping in a single bond line.
Highlights: temperature and moisture resistance, conformable cores for textured surfaces, transparent options for visible joins.
Series: VHB 4910 (clear/general), 5952 (conformable, black), 4941 (general purpose), GPH series (high temperature).
Ideal for: structural panel bonds, stiffener attachment, outdoor and high-humidity environments.
Double-Sided & Transfer Tapes
Film, tissue, and foam carriers for mounting, laminating, splicing, and component attach below VHB/ACXplus structural duty — wide range of tack levels, thickness, and chemistry options.
Highlights: acrylic and rubber chemistries; die-cut friendly for automated assembly; LSE grades where standard tapes peel.
Examples: tesa® 4965 (thin PET double-sided); 3M™ 467MP/468MP transfer tapes; foam mounting tape families.
Ideal for: nameplates, sensors, clips, trim, lamination, and general component mounting.
Masking & Surface Protection
Crepe, polyester, and fine-line masking tapes for paint, powder, plating, and anodising processes; PE and specialist protection films for fabrication and transit.
Highlights: high-temperature grades to 260°C (polyester/polyimide); clean removal without residue; fine-line grades for tight paint edges.
Ideal for: powder coating, sandblasting, anodising masking; finish protection through assembly and logistics.
