Double-Sided Tapes: Tissue, Film, Foam and Transfer
Mounting, laminating, splicing, and fixing across a wide range of constructions — from tissue and film for light assembly through to foam carriers that bridge into high-performance structural bonding. We match carrier, adhesive chemistry, and thickness to your substrates and process. For ultra-thin bond lines with no carrier, see adhesive transfer tapes.
Need clean bonds without rivets, or a thin splice that survives temperature cycling? Carrier and adhesive selection is not interchangeable — the wrong pairing on a mixed-substrate lamination fails at the weakest interface, not the tape specification.
Where Double-Sided Tape Specification Goes Wrong
Most double-sided tape failures trace back to the same decisions made at the point of purchase rather than at the point of specification. Choosing the right adhesive starts with defining surface energy, gap, temperature range, and mechanical load — before selecting carrier or chemistry.
Wrong carrier or adhesive pairing
Film versus foam and acrylic versus rubber choices drive delamination when the surface energy of both sides and the lamination stack-up are not defined before ordering. Mixed-substrate jobs need the construction chosen to the weaker interface, not the stronger one.
Edge seepage in outdoor use
In exterior applications, moisture and cleaning chemicals seep under tape edges and degrade the bond progressively. Closed-cell foam carriers seal the bond line and block ingress — open constructions do not. The distinction matters from day one of outdoor exposure.
Adhesion failure on LSE plastics
Standard double-sided tapes peel from polyolefins such as PP and PE because surface energy is too low for conventional acrylic chemistry. Specialist LSE-grade tapes achieve adhesion on these substrates without primer or flame treatment — but must be specified correctly.
Performance loss in temperature swings
General-purpose tapes become brittle below zero or lose shear strength at elevated temperature — failure modes that do not appear in ambient workshop testing but show up in field service or transit. Grade selection must account for the service range, not storage temperature.
Visual defects in clear assemblies
Standard tapes leave bubbles, adhesive lines, or yellowing in glass-to-glass or clear plastic bonding. Transparent assemblies require optically clear acrylic chemistry where both clarity and bond performance are verified — not assumed from a standard catalogue grade.
Traceability gaps in quality systems
Unbranded or grey-market tape cannot provide the material certifications, batch numbers, or technical data sheets required by modern QMS audits. Authorised supply from tesa and 3M provides full traceability from manufacturer batch to production record.
Where Double-Sided Tapes Are Used
Double-sided tapes span most manufacturing sectors. For application-specific guidance, the signage manufacturing and electronics assembly pages cover the most demanding construction and adhesion requirements in each sector.
Printing and paper
Web splicing, core starts, plate mounting, and in-line lamination — tissue and film constructions at the speed and caliper that press equipment demands.
Signage and displays
Graphics attachment, trim bonding, retail hardware, and display fabrication — often requiring weatherable acrylic chemistry and clean removal from some surfaces.
Construction and interiors
Flooring transitions, mirror and panel mounting, insulation facings, and architectural detail bonding — foam carriers for gap tolerance on uneven surfaces.
General industrial assembly
Appliances, white goods, furniture, and industrial subassemblies — permanent bonds where the carrier and adhesive combination is matched to substrate and service load.
Packaging
Finger-lift closures, envelope seals, and promotional attachment — food-contact and indirect-food grades available where regulatory compliance is required.
Textiles and leather
Fabric lamination, trim attachment, and technical textile assembly — cloth carriers for tensile strength; tissue for conformable fabric-to-fabric bonds.
Featured Double-Sided Tape Products
We stock and source across tesa® and 3M™ — widths, liner options, and die-cut formats available to order. For foam carrier tapes including gap-fill and vibration-damping constructions, see foam tapes.
tesa® 4965 — PET film
High-performance tackified acrylic adhesive on dimensionally stable PET carrier. Global reference grade for demanding mounting and splicing duties.
Uses: metal and plastic assembly, heavy-duty mounting, high-shear splice duties.
3M™ 9087 / 9086
9086 tissue carrier for conformable lamination; 9087 PVC carrier for higher-shear mounting on smooth surfaces. Both use rubber-based adhesive for immediate tack.
Uses: POS display, foam and felt lamination, general industrial assembly.
tesa® 4970 — thick PVC
Thick PVC carrier with aggressive acrylic adhesive — provides conformability over rough or textured surfaces where film tapes bridge rather than follow.
Uses: display mounting, nameplates, irregular or embossed substrates.
tesa® 62936 / 4957 — PE foam
Polyethylene foam carrier for gap tolerance, cushioning, and slight vibration damping in interior mounting applications. Available in multiple thicknesses.
Uses: mirror mounting, trim attachment, retail fixtures, interior signage.
tesa® 4964 — cloth carrier
Woven cloth carrier for high tensile and tear strength — suitable for floor coverings, exhibition builds, and heavy-duty fabric-backed assembly.
Uses: carpet and flooring, exhibition panel mounting, heavy fabric assembly.
tesa® 4900 — acrylic transfer
Pure acrylic transfer tape — no carrier, minimal caliper, high conformability. For optically clear bonds, grades such as tesa® ACXplus 732x and 3M™ 4910 are available.
Uses: foam and film lamination, textured surfaces, thin bond lines, clear assemblies.
Specification, Sampling, and Supply
Carrier, adhesive, liner, temperature range, surface energy, and any regulatory requirements (indirect food contact, flame class) narrow the field quickly when reviewed against datasheets. The Austen Approach pairs construction-led selection with unwind, die-cut, and lamination equipment compatibility so choices stay stable from first article to volume reels.
Substrate-matched sample kits
We send samples across tesa® and 3M™ constructions matched to your substrates and bond area — so you test on your actual materials, not a catalogue assumption.
LSE, outdoor, and clear bond guidance
LSE plastics, UV-exposed outdoor applications, and optically clear assemblies each require specific chemistry — not a standard grade with the correct width. We provide substrate surface energy data and accelerated ageing results to support specification.
Authorised supply with batch traceability
As a tesa Platinum Partner and 3M Authorised Distributor, every roll we supply carries full batch traceability and genuine manufacturer technical data — essential for QMS audit, food-adjacent applications, and regulated industries.
