High-Performance Structural Bonding: tesa® ACXplus and 3M™ VHB™
When a bonded joint is a primary load-bearing component, product choice and joint design are engineering decisions, not purchasing ones. tesa® ACXplus acrylic foam tapes and 3M™ VHB™ structural tapes replace mechanical fasteners in demanding industrial applications — sealing, damping, and permanently joining dissimilar materials in one step.
Need rivet-grade strength without drill swarf, heat distortion, or visible fixings? Viscoelastic acrylic foam tapes distribute stress across the full bond line, seal the joint against ingress, and survive temperature cycling and environmental exposure when correctly specified.
When Standard Fastening Approaches Fall Short
Most structural bonding failures trace back to the same root causes: unvalidated specification, rigid joints on dissimilar materials, and underestimating environmental exposure. Replacing traditional fasteners with high-performance tapes solves each of these — when the product, preparation, and joint geometry are correctly matched.
Unvalidated joint data
High-performance bonds fail tender review when peel, shear, and temperature assumptions are never matched to line trials on production materials. Lap-shear figures from a datasheet are a starting point, not a specification.
Point-loading stress concentrations
Mechanical fasteners concentrate load around each hole — a failure mechanism in thin-gauge metal, composites, and plastics under cyclic stress. Fatigue cracks initiate at drill points that a continuous bond line eliminates entirely.
Thermal deformation of large panels
In large exterior assemblies, CTE mismatch between frame and skin materials causes oil-canning or buckling under rigid fastening. The bond line must accommodate movement, not resist it.
Multi-material joining challenges
Metals bonded to plastics or glass carry surface energy differences and chemical incompatibility risks that rule out many liquid adhesive systems. Grade selection for LSE substrates requires a different approach entirely.
Unverified joint strength liability
Without compliance to DIN 2304 or ISO 21368, manufacturers cannot demonstrate that bonded joints meet the safety requirements for load-bearing use — a significant liability gap on structural applications.
Environmental degradation in service
Lower-specification tapes delaminate under sustained UV, salt spray, or chemical exposure. Service environment governs grade selection — outdoor and automotive-grade products are not interchangeable with general-purpose variants.
Where High-Performance Bonding Replaces Fasteners
ACXplus and VHB™ are specified across sectors wherever strength, seal, and design freedom must coexist. For sector-specific guidance, see solutions by industry and substrate bonding guides.
Signage and graphics
Structural bonds for letters, trays, ACM panels, and display components — invisible fixings, weatherable, UV-stable across the ACXplus and VHB™ ranges.
Automotive and transportation
Trim attachment, emblem bonding, interior modules, and exterior panel joins — vibration resistance and thermal cycling performance are grade-defining requirements.
Architectural and construction
ACM and HPL panel bonding, glazing accessories, and structural stiffeners — wind load, movement, and long-term outdoor durability reviewed per project.
Electronics assembly
Thin, sealed bonds for displays, lenses, and housings — precise thickness, moisture exclusion, and EMI path management where mechanical fixings are impractical.
Metal fabrication
Stiffener bonding, nameplate attachment, and enclosure skin joins — tape eliminates galvanic contact between dissimilar metals and removes the need for weld finishing.
General industrial manufacturing
Appliances, furniture, point-of-sale, and production equipment — wherever a permanent, high-strength tape bond is validated on your line and substrate.
The Two Platforms: ACXplus and VHB™
As a tesa Platinum Partner and 3M Authorised Distributor, recommendations are application-led — see choosing the right adhesive for a structured selection guide covering surface energy, gap, load type, and environment.
tesa® ACXplus — Acrylic Core Technology
ACXplus combines high bond performance with stress relaxation across temperature cycles. The viscoelastic core compensates for CTE differences between metals, glass, and plastics — with formulations for hard-to-bond and low surface energy substrates.
Key families:
705x: high transparency for glass and clear plastics.
706x / 72xx: high adhesion and multi-purpose, including difficult finishes and LSE substrates where specified.
707x / 78xx (Black Line): high resistance — outdoor and automotive-grade durability.
3M™ VHB™ — Very High Bond Tapes
VHB™ is a proven family of double-sided acrylic foam tapes used globally as a structural fastener replacement — strength, seal, and surface conformity in one product, with an extensive field history across industrial sectors.
Key families:
General purpose (e.g. 4950, 4941): metals, glass, and many MSE plastics.
Conformable (e.g. 5952): textured or irregular surfaces.
Clear (e.g. 4910): visible bonds and aesthetic applications.
Specialty (GPH, LSE, 4945): elevated temperature, LSE plastics, and plasticiser resistance — match datasheet to substrate.
From Specification to Structural Confidence
Correct product selection is necessary but not sufficient. Joint geometry, surface preparation, application pressure, and environment all govern whether a bond performs to specification. The Austen Approach addresses all of these before volume supply begins.
Joint-led trials with traceable data
We move from datasheet lap-shear to panel-level pulls on your actual materials — metals, composites, coated substrates — so structural confidence matches your internal or OEM sign-off requirements.
Compliance and standards support
We help implement DIN 2304 and ISO 21368 across bonded joint design and process verification — providing the documentation and data needed for safety-critical applications and customer audit requirements.
Application tooling and FEA support
We specify the rollers, jigs, and application pressures needed for repeatable structural-grade performance on the shop floor. For complex joint geometries, FEA simulation is available through our manufacturer partnerships.
